The Rail Safety Inspection Office works to ensure that the rail system and its transport is as safe as possible. Its long-term goal is reducing accidents and incidents within the Czech rail system (including railway and underground, tram and trolley bus systems, and cableways).
The core objective of the Office is for the prevention of accidents and incidents. The Rail Safety Inspection Office:
- determines the causes and circumstances of accidents and incidents in rail transport;
- detects deficiencies compromising the safety of rail infrastructure and rail transport;
- provides recommendations to rail infrastructure and transport operators to improve safety;
- carries out spot-checks to ensure that its safety recommendations are being followed;
- evaluates trends in accidents and incidents within the rail system and takes measures to improve the situation.
Within these activities, the Rail Safety Inspection Office checks:
- the condition of the infrastructure and rail vehicles;
- if the rail operator's way of working is in accordance to safety regulations;
- if the rail operator's employees are working in compliance to the safety regulations.
